How Scappi handles your data

Last updated October 6, 2026

This notice covers the Scappi app for iPhone, iPad and Android, the website at scappi.app and shared recipe pages at share.scappi.app. We collect what Scappi needs to work, we do not sell your data, and we do not use it for advertising.

Who we are

Scappi is made by OÜ Gears of Sumo, Kopli 81a, 11713 Tallinn, Estonia. We are responsible for your personal data as described here. Write to privacy@scappi.app with any question about it.

What we collect and why

Your account

When you first open Scappi it makes an account for your device, so you can start without signing up. If you sign in, we keep your email address to send sign-in codes and to keep your recipes with you across devices. We also keep your app language and measurement preferences, and a record of your sessions (including the IP address and device type they came from) to keep you signed in and your account secure.

Your recipes

We store the recipes in your recipe box and what you add to them: links you add, photos you take or choose, your notes and edits, favorites, collections and cooking progress. When you add a recipe, the link or photos are sent to our AI providers to read the recipe (see below). When you chat about a recipe, the conversation is stored so you can continue it, and it is deleted when you delete the recipe or your account.

A recipe read from a link is kept in a shared cache so that anyone adding the same link gets it straight away. The cache holds the recipe from that page, not who added it.

Collections and sharing

If you invite someone to a collection, the members see its recipes and each other’s email addresses. If the person you invite doesn’t use Scappi yet, we email them the invitation and keep their address with it until they sign in with that address, the invitation is withdrawn, or it expires after 30 days. If you share a recipe, anyone with the link can see it on share.scappi.app. The page shows the recipe and your note on it, not who you are.

Notifications

If you allow notifications, we keep your device’s push token to tell you when a recipe is ready or couldn’t be read.

Scappi Pro

If you subscribe to Scappi Pro, Apple takes the payment under its own privacy policy, and we never see your card or Apple ID. Apple tells us about the subscription: which plan it is, whether it is a free trial, when the current period ends, and Apple’s number for the subscription. We keep that with your account so Scappi Pro works on all your devices, and ask Apple again whenever it renews, lapses or is refunded. If you restore the subscription on another Scappi account, it moves to that account. We also count the recipes you import and the changes you make in the recipe chat, to apply your plan’s limits.

Recipes we email you

If you ask us on scappi.app to read a recipe link and email it to you, we keep your email address, the link, your language, which page you asked from and when, and whether you opened the recipe. We use them to send you the recipe, to limit how often an address can be sent recipes, and to learn which pages people find useful. The recipe itself goes into the shared cache described above, and its page at share.scappi.app can be opened by anyone with the link.

Technical data

Our servers log requests to keep Scappi running and secure and to find faults: the time, IP address, the app version and platform, and which account made the request. We also record how much AI processing each recipe read and conversation uses, to keep costs under control. Logs are kept for a limited time and then deleted.

Website analytics

scappi.app uses Google Analytics to count visits and see which pages people find useful. It sets cookies and shares data about your visit, including your IP address, with Google.

Shared recipe pages at share.scappi.app count visits with Cloudflare Web Analytics instead. It sets no cookies and keeps nothing on your device, and it records which page was opened, the site that linked to it, and your country, browser and type of device, without building a profile of you. The app uses neither.

Why we are allowed to

  • To provide Scappi (your account, recipes, reading recipes, sharing, notifications, Scappi Pro, and recipes you ask us to email): because it is necessary for the service you asked for.
  • To keep Scappi secure and working (logs, usage records, abuse limits): our legitimate interest in running a reliable, affordable service.
  • Website analytics: your consent, which you can withdraw at any time.
  • Visit counts on shared recipe pages: our legitimate interest in knowing how shared recipes are found, counted without cookies or a profile of you.

Who processes your data for us

We use these providers, each under an agreement that limits them to processing your data on our behalf:

  • Cloudflare: hosting, database, photo storage, sending email, server logs, and visit counts on shared recipe pages.
  • OpenAI: reading recipes from links and photos, recipe conversations, edits and translations. OpenAI does not use data sent through its API to train its models. The app asks you to agree to this, and to Browser Use below, before it sends anything.
  • Browser Use: reading recipe pages our first reader cannot, and finding a picture of the finished dish.
  • Expo: delivering push notifications and app updates.
  • Grafana Labs: storing server logs and monitoring, hosted in London.
  • Google: website analytics, and the mailbox that receives email you send us.

Some of these providers are based in the United States. Where your data leaves the EU, it is protected by the EU Standard Contractual Clauses, the EU–US Data Privacy Framework, or the EU’s adequacy decision for the United Kingdom.

How long we keep it

Your account and recipes are kept until you delete them. Deleting your account in the app deletes your account, your recipes and the photos and conversations that belong to them, your Scappi Pro records and counts, and ends the shares of recipes only you kept. Deleting your account does not cancel a subscription with Apple; cancel it in your App Store settings. Records of recipes we emailed you are kept until you ask us to remove them. Logs are kept only as long as we need them to run and protect Scappi.

Your rights

You can ask us for a copy of your data, to correct it, to delete it, to restrict or object to how we use it, and to receive it in a portable format. Where we rely on your consent you can withdraw it at any time. Write to privacy@scappi.app and we will answer within a month. Your data has what you can do yourself, in the app.

If you think we have handled your data wrongly, you can complain to the Estonian Data Protection Inspectorate (Andmekaitse Inspektsioon, aki.ee) or the data protection authority where you live.

Children

Scappi is not meant for children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their data.

Changes

If we change how we handle your data, we will update this page and its date. If a change matters, we will tell you in the app or by email.
